Tall Ships

This is a fantastic chance to see some of the world’s most beautiful ships under full sail. The ships will arrive on Friday the 25th and will stay until departure on Tuesday May the 29th. While the ships are docked in Greenport, all visitors are welcome to step aboard and chat with the members of the ships crews. The overwhelming beauty of the ships on the move in full sail is magnificent, being able to step aboard and chat with the crew is the hypothetical icing on the cake.

These boats are part of the Tall Ships Challenge Race Series that originates in Savannah, Georgia. Once the vessels depart from Greenport, they are headed to Newport, Rhode Island, and then onto Halifax and Nova Scotia. The ships are commemorating the bicentennial celebration of the War of 1812.

Visitors who want to tour the ships and interact with crew members will be able to do so from Saturday, May 26th until Monday, May 28th from 10am until 6pm. There is no charge for children 12 and under, adult tickets are $7, and senior or veteran tickets are $5. The Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast Inn will offer free Tall Ships tickets to those who stay over for the three night Memorial Day weekend. While visiting the ships don’t forget to check out the vendors in town and on Front Street. They will close each day at 6pm. Also, remember to bring your camera!

Those who visit at least ten of the wineries that are participating in this event will receive a complementary tasting of a listed featured wine along with the purchase of any in-house tastings. Visitors should have their passports stamped at the wineries after purchasing a minimum of one bottle of that winery or vineyard’s featured wines. Visitors who have ten stamps on their passports will receive:

The Shorecrest Beach House

The Shorecrest Beach House sits atop a grassy bluff  overlooking the Long Island Sound and is available to rent weekly, monthly or seasonally. It has just undergone a major renovation adding a large open plan room on the second floor which includes a seating area next to picture windows offering expansive views of the water and two twin beds. There  are 3 bedrooms on the ground floor, one with a king bed, one queen, and the third with two twin beds. The kitchen and both full bathrooms on the ground floor have also each been fully renovated and guests love the panoramic views of the beach and sunsets viewed  through the wall to floor to ceiling windows in the living room and from the deck. In the evening you can relax in front of the the open fireplace,  and giant flat screen TV, or cook up a great dinner from local fare in the new fully equipped kitchen with dining area  for six. Enjoy mornings and sunsets and al fresco dining on the deck. The kitchen is fully stocked with all you need for cooking and serving, and all linens are provided. Other amenities include, WiFi, centralized air conditioning and heating, a laundry room and beach chairs.  Beach House renters can take advantage of  the wide variety of activities found in the area, and exclusive to guests, our beach on the inlet to the rear of the BnB, great for paddle boarding and kayaking. Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast concierge services are also available to beach house guests and each renter will receive a winery discount card to 24 local wineries.

The BnB

The Inn itself is a five bedroom home that can sleep ten visitors. Although during the summer season, the BnB runs as a Bed and Breakfast, it is now available for private home rental for corporate events, group vacations, or family reunions complete with a housekeeper and cook. Aquebogue House

Located in the village of Aquebogue, this Peconic Bay Beach house is currently under renovations to add a 4th bedroom to this already impressive 3 bedroom home, 3 bathroom home. The ground floor boasts an open plan with a roomy equipped kitchen with an adjoining dining area that seats 6 to 8 people. Visitors to the Aquebogue House will enjoy floor to ceiling windows with French doors that open out on a covered porch and lower deck perfect for outdoor dining while overlooking the water. A few steps from the lower deck is the private community beach.

East Marion Lakefront House

Enjoy luxurious lakefront living with only a short walk to a sandy beach on Shelter Bay.  All three bedrooms are equipped with cable TVs with dvd. Hardwood flooring, lake views and Country French Decor surround visitors with decorative warmth and many fine amenities. They include two full bathrooms, (one on each floor) a sitting area with fireplace, Cable Vision Triple Play, double burner gas grill on the spacious deck overlooking the lake, and a fully equipped French Country style kitchen with all new appliances.

Where the garden borders the lake the floating dock  is the launching pad for kayaking, canoeing on the private East Marion Lake, and the a short walk down Trumans Path will take you to the community’s private Shelter Bay sandy beach with a private mooring for your boat if you need one. Five minutes drive from Greenport village and the ferries to Shelter Island, the Hamptons or Orient Point to Connecticut and New England, the East Marion Lake Front house is conveniently located for easy travel, shopping, antiquing, vineyards, bicycling, dining & all the entertainment and activities the North Fork offers visitors.

Southold Bay Inlet

The Southold Bay Inlet House is located on a large landscaped property with private waterfront on the largest inlet on tht of Shelter Bay. Floor to ceiling windows from the west facing side of the house offer incredible views of sunsets and the bay. The three bedrooms all with queen beds are exquisitely appointed and include amenities such as a deck overlooking the inlet and Jacuzzi tub in the second floor master bathroom,  French doors that open into the garden from the ground floor king bedroom, with private bath. The well stocked designer kitchen will see your family or group through the most lavish meals. A spacious living room with a fireplace and extra seating overlooks views of the lawn and stone patio. Long Island Opera Night – Thursday April 19^th

The Old Field Vineyards Sustainable Agriculture Tour – Saturday April 21^st

Whether you plan to begin your own home sustainable garden or are considering doing so for your own dining establishment, this is a fantastic place to begin your tour of the knowledge it takes to implement sustainable practices in your garden or on your farm. The tour cost $14 per person and last around an hour and a half. This price also includes the tasting of six still wines.

Custer Institute Saturday Evening Stargazing – Saturday April 21^st

Weather permitting, every Saturday night, the Custer Observatory in Southold on the North Fork of Long Island holds a stargazing event. However, this week the Lyrid Meteor Shower will make viewing the night sky a bit more extra exciting! This meteor shower actually will be occuring in our night sky from April 16th until April 25th, but on Saturday night, the peak of the shower arrives, so do not miss your chance to star, and meteor gaze at Custer Institute this weekend! Upcoming Long Island Restaurant Week April 22^nd – April 29^th

Upcoming this week is the award-winning Long Island Restaurant Week where area restaurants host Prix Fixe menus for eight solid days! Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast will be part of the North Fork Bed and Breakfast Association’s Summer Event, a celebration of tourism and agriculture which takes place this coming Saturday, July 16th.
I’ve been working hard in the Shorecrest garden getting it ready for the visitors who have bought tickets for the garden tour part of the day’s activities. Visitors with the garden tour ticket can start their day with a visit to the Cornell University Extension experimental gardens on Sound Avenue in Riverhead, NY. If you garden on Long Island and would like some great ideas on what will do well here, this is a good place to start. Do you have a sick plant or strange looking insects eating your veggies? These are the people to call or even send them a leaf in the mail; they will get back to you with an explanation and possibly a cure. Cornell is a great resource for both farmers and gardeners.
The tour of the gardens continues in the afternoon from 1pm to 4pm with visits to six bed and breakfast, each of whom will be hosting a local farmer or food producer. Sang Lee will have a stand at Shorecrest and we will be serving fresh mint tea and mint flavored lemonade using our own home grown mint leaves. From 4.30pm to 6.30pm, visitors can purchase tickets for a prix fixe dinner, choosing from one of 9 North Fork restaurants: The Old Mill Inn, Jamesport Manor Inn, The Portly Grape, Scrimshaw, Skippers, Sound View, and Porto Bello will offer their chef’s signature dishes to diners. To end the days with a bang, the NFBBA will be hosting a dance with the music of Trevor Davision at Martha Clara Vineyard from 7:15 to 10:30 p.m.
The bed and breakfast association is donating part of the profits of the summer event to Cornell Cooperative Extension, which supports gardening and agriculture on Long Island and is part of the association’s longstanding commitment to strengthen business on the North Fork while supporting agriculture and tourism.

On Main Road in Southold, opposite Old Field vineyard and due south of Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast is to be found one of the top restaurants on Long Island, and the New York area, the North Fork Table & Inn. Quite a few of my guests of late have been visiting the North Fork specifically to eat here; the restaurant has itself become a destination amongst lovers of good food. It is easy to understand why. Some friends and I took advantage of their prix fixe menu during last month’s Long Island Restaurant Week and were delighted as usual. Food, ambience and service left nothing to be desired.

And my friends, guests and I aren’t the only ones to be impressed. The Suffolk Times Review reported this week that The North Fork Table has just been given a score of 29 out of 30 in the recently published ‘Long Island Restaurant Survey’ 2011-2012 rankings. The survey included 901 restaurants reviewed by 6,217 diners.

The cuisine has been described as ‘dynamic American fare that is fully devoted to providing the highest standards in culinary excellence’. Inspired by homegrown organic produce, award winning North Fork artisanal cheeses, and the freshest of seafood (as is only possible when the fishing fleet docks less than a mile away on Southold and Peconic Bays), North Fork Table & Inn has all the attributes needed for drawing such a consistent crowd of admirers.

Add a wine list highlighted by many acclaimed and awarded Long Island wines, dining at the North Fork Table is an experience any restaurant patron and food aficionado is sure to enjoy as their reviews attest:

There are a variety of menu plans to choose from depending on what time of the day you are visiting the restaurant and  based on seasonal options. Some current menu choices are a $68 3-Course Prix Fixe menu and the Chef’s Tasting menu for about $30 more including wine paired with your dishes.

Menu options and opening hours

Lunch is available in the restaurant on Saturdays and Sundays from noon until 2:30pm. You can check out the 2011 lunch service menu and lunch tasting menu here. 

Dinner is served from 5:00pm until 10:00pm Friday and Saturday evenings and from 5:00pm until 9:00pm Sunday, Monday, and Thursday. These links will take you to a sample dinner menu and sample dinner tasting menu.  Children 12 and under can enjoy a 2-Course Prix Fixe meal for $28.

Visitors should plan ahead as reservations are commonly taken one month in advance during high season. I can usually find my guests a table however if I have a few days notice. The restaurant  is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, as well as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Lunch Truck Service

Only the North Fork Table could come up with such gourmet food served from a truck. The best fast food stop I’ve ever come across, the lunch truck is open for service from 11:30 to 3:30 7 days a week. The ‘sublime stylings of Chefs Fleming and Hayden meet astounding, quick lunch convenience, head on’ with their lunch service menu.
If you don’t have time to come in and sit, but must eat on the move, this is a great option.
The North Fork Table is one of my top recommendations to guests when they ask for dining suggestions and I am delighted to have such a splendid culinary attraction as a neighbor; just remember to save room for breakfast!
