Every weekend through to the New Year events are scheduled in the village for children and adults, including the opportunity for shopping, great dining (such as Noah’s and The Frisky Oyster) plus concerts, house tours, films, and much more for your entertainment.

The season culminates with a bang – literally – on New Year’s Eve with a party and celebration at the carousel in Mitchell Park, the traditional raising of the anchor, and spectacular fireworks over Greenport Harbor. For a complete list of events you can visit the Greenport Holiday Festival website and for photographs and more pictures, the Suffolk Times on line newspaper has a comprehensive spread on Greenport and the festival activities this week. Parade photo by Katharine Schroeder/Suffolk Times Review

Visitors to Greenport and the North Fork discover a treasure trove of delights for all appetites; gifts for everyone on your list; decorations and gift wraps; antique stores and museum shops. All the villages along the length of Rout 25, one of the two east to west roads from Riverhead to Orient Point offer their own unique holiday festivities.

Each year the Southold Historical Society hosts a candlelight tour of the Historic District in December to coincide with the North Fork Bed and Breakfast Associations Holiday House Tour; also in Southold is the Custer Institute Observatory, which is open every Saturday evening for star gazing or catching the latest meteor shower. Southold is famous for its dark skies and lack of light pollution and star gazing is a favorite of Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast or rental house guests from our beach on the Long Island Sound.

Speaking of things to do on the North Fork during the holidays and winter, we cannot forget to mention the wineries and vineyards. Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast is making its own wine this year with Lisa and Anthony Sannino of Bella Vita Vineyard on Peconic Lane in Cutchogue, the only custom wine making facility on the North Fork of Long Island. We are just printing up our first label and hope to have some bottles ready to serve and gift in time for Christmas this year. Shorecrest and the other members of the North Fork Bed and Breakfast Association (NFBBA) also offer to our guests an exclusive winery discount card, with special offers on purchases and complimentary tastings at over 20 wineries.

So come along and enjoy the festivities during the holiday season; we are open for visitors Christmas day and the week between Christmas and New Year, and every weekend throughout the winter. We look forward to welcoming you to Shorecrest soon.

Wishing you a very happy holiday season and healthy and Successful New Year

seascapes, great fishing, wineries, farms and farm stands and delicious and healthy fresh produce. Peconic Bay scallops, Long Island duck, strawberries, potatoes, local cheeses and breads and the many varieties of wine produced right here in wine country are just a few of the delectable offerings.

The tradition of farming has continued and diversified over the past 50 years and now has taken on yet another life as artisans, chefs, winemakers, gourmets, farmers and viticulturists have joined together to produce distinctive foods, explore methods of sustainable agriculture and keep the North Fork the pristine environment that we all value.

On Sunday, September 12, from 10 a.m. 4 p.m., we celebrate this with The North Fork Foodie Tour. The self guided tour offers all who participate the opportunity to meet the people who have dedicated their lives to producing unique local foods and wines, to learn how they do it and sample the bounty.

During the tour you can learn about organic farming, beekeeping, goat farming & cheese making, growing oysters, wine making, and how to keep a traditional family farm alive and well in the age of big agribusiness. Taste the difference of fresh, locally-produced food!

Shorecrest is offering a complimentary bottle of local wine to guests attending the tour and for guests staying three nights that weekend, a complimentary bottle of local wine and one free ticket to the tour ($25 value). Check our reservation calendar for BnB availability by clicking here. If you are a larger group looking to spend some time on the North Fork that weekend, perhaps one of our waterfront houses would be available.

Each year, this epicurean exploration, hosted by the North Fork Reform Synagogue, gets better and better! This year is no different –

If you are considering renting a beach house on the North Fork, consider the Shorecrest Beach House. It has three bedrooms and is located across the street from the Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast. It is located on the beach and overlooks the Long Island Sound and on a clear day has a view to Connecticut and has awesome sunsets as it faces North West. It is also a great vacation spot for families with children and dogs, as it is pet friendly. My current guests, Alex and Marina, took the house for three weeks this August (each year they expand their vacation by an extra week) with their two daughters age 7 and 3 years and still Alex says ‘it is not long enough’.

The family is usually to be found on the beach in front of the house, but they have found many other things to do with the children as well, so I asked him to share that information with my readers.

Mya who is seven has been taking Horse back riding lessons at Hidden Lake Farm on County Route 48 in Southold with the owner, Jackie. They offer adult lessons too with an introductory ½ hour class for $55 and 1 hour private lessons for $85. The stable provides the riding hat and you will need shoes or boots with a heel similar to a ‘paddock boot’. You can reach Jackie at 631 495 3000.

Both children enjoyed morning camp at Bre’s Farm, 57685 Main Road in Southold where they enjoyed arts and crafts, pony rides, the petting barn feeding the animals and collecting fresh eggs from the hens. They loved it and, and you can reach the farm to get more information by calling Debbie at 631 765 8163 or 765 2186.

The whole family also enjoyed riding the vintage carousel in Mitchell Park in Greenport as well as free music and dancing on Monday evening’s all summer and free Shakespeare in the park; this summer it was ‘Love’s Labor’s Lost. You can find out more by visiting the calendar on the Greenport Village website.

They also loved the cruise they took around Greenport Harbor and Shelter Island on The Glory an environmentally-friendly vessel, which went solar this year. They were delighted and especially appreciated the whisper-quiet and fume-free tour of the nooks and crannies of the Peconic Bay.

At the end of a busy day there was nothing better than to watch the sun go down on the Long Island Sound from the beach house lawn while barbecuing some fresh fish just arrived at the Port of Egypt Marina with a glass of wine purchased from the serene Old Field Vineyard, a two minute drive away where they also enjoyed tastings while entertained by the antics of the many varieties of ducks, geese and chickens that roam the grounds.

To find more information on the beach house and other houses I manage for rental on the North Fork, you can check our on-line availability complete with photographs and rates, or call me, Marilyn at the Inn, 631 765 1570 and I will be delighted to help you.

Finally, a last word from Alex about what they enjoy most at the house itself:

‘As to activities in the house, no I do not fish, but with two small children it is never boring here. We swim, read, cook (a lot), and entertain friends and family who visit us from the city. It has been an amazing few weeks and I certainly hope to return next year.’
