Winterfest; Jazz on the Vine on Long Island’s North Fork

Winterfest, Long Island’s celebration of music and wine kicked off on Valentine’s Day weekend once again this year, with great success. The Festivities continue this weekend with music at Palmer, Castello Di Borghese, Martha Clara and Baiting Hollow Vineyards and Waters Crest Winery on Saturday. On Sunday Diliberto, Macari, Pellegrini and Raphael wineries will each be featuring musical events.

Jazz on the Vine is the theme for this years Long Island Winterfest event which kicks off this weekend with the first of a three event series of one-hour talks presented by the East End Arts Council at locations in Greenport, Southampton and Riverhead.

The series launches at 1pm on Saturday February 12 at Brecknock Hall in Greenport with internationally renowned saxophonist David Liebman; author, scholar and pianist Dr. Lewis Porter and hosted by trombonist Ray Anderson. They will be discussing the recordings of John Coltrane in ‘Trane’s Travels: Giant Steps to Ascension’, and demonstrating musical examples by performing them in the elegant surroundings of Brecknock Hall.

Wineries throughout the North Fork will be hosting musical talent each weekend. Below is a calendar of the events taking place. Greenport NY Maritime Festival September 2010

Tents in Mitchell Park at the Greenport Maritime Festival

The Greenport Maritime Festival is a three day affair and a favorite destination for guests of Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast. Starting with the ‘Land and Sea’ Cocktail Reception on Friday evening, September 24^th and continuing throughout Saturday and Sunday September 25th and 26th with a street fair each day and events that include a kayak derby, whale boat race, a Clam Chowder contest and music provided by several bands, there is entertainment to suit everyone.

Each year the festival draws about 20,000 people and the crowd enjoys a variety of family activities in Mitchell Park, the home of the beautiful and fun Greenport Carousel, such as ‘Captain Kidd s Alley’, old fashioned childrens games, a snapper fishing contest, traditional art and craft demonstrations and appearances in unexpected places throughout the weekend by the fearsome ‘Greenport Pirates!

There is lots for grown ups to do too. On Saturday night there is dancing in Mitchell Park to the music of the band Melange and throughout the village many local merchants, galleries and food vendors will be open late for you to enjoy on your evening stroll.

Getting around on the North Fork

Shorecrest is offering a special driver service for those of our guests who want to avoid the hassle of parking in the village on this weekend. A pick up or drop off from the BnB to Greenport is $10 each way. We are also offering this service for winery visits, at $20 per pick up or drop off for up to 6 people. We can also help you organize your wine tour using our winery discount card for best value!

For city dwellers that would like to come by bus or train and still want to be able to conveniently travel around the North Fork visiting different villages and wineries, this can be a great option, and for groups visiting together the price is excellent! We can also arrange for bicycle rentals for getting around on the roads and kayak rentals for paddling the creeks. Shorecrest’s own beach on the Arshamomoque inlet to the rear of the BnB is a great place to launch a kayak, canoe or paddle board.

August events at the Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast and North Fork Long Island

This last week got away from me once again; I’d intended to post far more information about events going on but between my summer neighbors who come to visit and enjoying my guests company I’ve been too busy having fun. Time just flies but I am taking a couple of hours to catch up now.

Talking of guests, a group of charming young men that just visited last weekend sent me this photograph taken of us all standing on my front steps – don’t we look as though we are about to break into song? They were only here a short time but loved their stay and managed to see a lot, driving out to Orient State Park after breakfast on Saturday before sampling the wines of 6 different vineyards and then taking the ferry from Greenport to Shelter Island for an early evening tour and dinner at Planet Bliss where the food was pronounced ‘delicious’. I’ve been meaning to start a ‘guest photo gallery’ and this will be a great star!.

The weather has continued to be glorious; the whole of the last weekend and most of last week the temperature was in the 80’s f with a gentle breeze. This was perfect for the many outdoor events that were available to be enjoyed in the Vineyards, farms, parks and towns of the North Fork.

The East End Arts Council continues to sponsor wonderful musical and art events in conjunction with wineries and other local and regional businesses. On Saturday evening I attended a BNY Mellon Winepress event concert at Castello Di Borghese winery in Cutchogue to listen to Hugh Prestwood and Friends. Members of the East End Arts Council were invited to a pre concert reception where Noah of Noah’s restaurant in Greenport prepared delicious appetizers. I especially loved the goat cheese and beetroot ‘squares’ drizzled with his mom’s home-made honey and pine nuts – yum, try it when you next visit Noah’s. Noah’s is one of my favorite restaurants in Greenport and one I always recommend to my guests. I love the ‘small plate’ menu and they offer 3 and 5 ounce glasses of wine so you can conveniently pair different wines with the various dishes you might wish to sample.

During the pre concert reception Castello di Borghese served their Pinot Noir 2006 Estate and Sauvignon Blanc 2008 Reserve which were both outstanding. The Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast offers an exclusive discount card to guests of the BnB and rental properties which includes up to a 15% discount on quantity purchases of Castello Di Borghese wines and also a $5 discount off their ‘Wine Makers Walk’ tour. The tour takes you through the vineyard to their wine production facilities where you will learn about their Pinot Noir and other wines and get to taste them at various stages of development. Back in the tasting room after the tour you will taste the finished products. I’ve taken the tour and enjoyed it immensely. It is scheduled for Thursday and Sunday afternoons at 1pm during August at a cost of $20, or $15 with your Shorecrest discount. Advanced booking required by calling the vineyard at (631) 734-5111.

The 'Subdudes' play at the NoFo Rock and Folk Festival

Also on Saturday and Sunday the NoFo Rock and Folk Festival, again sponsored in part by the East End Arts Council was held at Peconic Bay vineyards in Cutchogue. The quality of the musical acts was outstanding and again beautiful weather blessed the event. There was a small village of tents set up in the fields amongst the vines where the concert was hosted housing vendors with lots of interesting wares and delicious food and drink, but apart from the music, the highlight of the event for me was learning to use a Hula Hoop! I’ve been attempting to do this since the 1950’s and finally learned how with the experienced help of Amy Gabrielson, a Hula Hoop expert. She was there with the weighted hoops that she makes herself, and explained that getting the right size is very important. Maybe I can get Amy to come by for pre- breakfast Hula Hooping exercise on the beach. Low impact and great for the abs. Perhaps this could become a Shorecrest specialty as the NoFo Rock Festival will during future North Fork summers! Be sure and make a note on your calendar for next year so you don’t miss this fun event.

You can bring the picnic dinner, blanket or chair and they’ll provide Grammy and Award Winning artists, wonderful wines and a spectacular setting, at a very reasonable cost.

The concert is from 6-8pm, rain or shine under the festival tent. They are also offering a Recession price roll-back, with tickets at only $15 per person in advance, $20 at the gate. Children under 12 years are admitted free.

Long Island Food and Wine Festival.

Chefs and vintners are banding together to get the word out about the area’s delicacies before the tourist season hits full swing.

The Long Island Wine & Food Festival will celebrate a world class wine region! Executive Chef and Co-Owner of Amarelle, Lia Fallon is a seasoned culinary
executive, food stylist and producer. Educated and trained at the Culinary
Academy in New York where she received her culinary arts degree, will be our
featured Chef during the first “Long Island Wine and Food Festival”.
Chef Fallon began her career in Manhattan at The Food Network as a food
stylist, working for celebrity chefs Emeril Lagasse and Bobby Flay and now
will bring her incredible talent to Borghese for this special tasting

The “UnHamptons North Fork Edition” of the “5th Annual Outsider Art in theHampton’s, with a selection of art in coordination with the Westhampton’s Beach Exhibition.

These exhibitions are a collaborative effort with Three Non Profit organizations; Fountain Gallery + Pure Vision Arts from New York City + Survivors Art Foundation.

Join us in the morning for a 2 mile hike with Palmer Vineyards vineyard manager, Josh Carp. Josh will give us a brief vineyard tour while we get a bit of exercise. Don’t forget to bring your favorite fluffy friend.
Donations will be accepted to benefit Last Chance Animal Rescue, a charitable, not-for profit organization created to save the lives of animals. One of the main goals of the foundation is to rescue animals that are located in “KILL” facilities and underwrite the costs of relocating them to “NO KILL” facilities in hopes of finding them a forever family.
Dogs available for adoption will join us as well!

Restaurant Week on the North Fork of Long Island

Starting Sunday November 1^st some of the top restaurants in the North Fork area are participating in Long Island Restaurant Week. I assembled this list of participants in my area from various websites including www.exploreli.com which seems to be one of the most comprehensive if you want more information. Below is the list in alphabetical order of their towns for the North Fork and a little further west, and includes several of my favorites. This is a great opportunity to sample the work of some excellent chefs. If you are traveling to the East End from Manhattan or the Western part of Long Island for instance I highly recommend that you take this opportunity to try La Plage in Wading River, or stop there on the way back. It is a bit off the beaten track but very much worth the diversion. More locally this is a perfect opportunity to try The North Fork Table and Inn in Southold which just achieved Four Star status.

We still have rooms at the Shorecrest Bed & Breakfast for this weekend and next, the perfect place to stay between meals while on your Gourmet adventure. I’m thinking up something special for the breakfasts as well!
